Carnaval, 1823 -Debret
“You deserve, you deserve
Everything is going well, everything is cool
Beer, samba, and tomorrow, Seu Zé
What if they end your Carnival? ”
General behavior-Gonzaguinha
This year there is no carnival in February. But Brazil does not deserve the carnival. At least, not yet.
It doesn't deserve forró, samba, maracatu, afroreggae.
It doesn't deserve axé, frevo, maracatu, xaxado, baião.(brazilian popular music)
It does not deserve the black river, Parintins, Garantido and Caprichoso.
It does not deserve the pink dolphin, the jaguar that is thrown in the river.
It does not deserve the flock of guarás.
It does not deserve the blue-sea of Maceió, the rivers of Bonito. I
t does not deserve the snow that the southern pampas offers.
It does not deserve maria-isabel, manioc with butter, rice-tropeiro, feijoada of every Sunday.(brasilian popular food)
It doesn't deserve the pasta chair, the hammock facing the sea.
We do not deserve Noel Rosa, Luiz Gonzaga, Vinícius de Moraes.(brazilian famous singers)
It doesn't deserve Machado de Assis, José de Alencar, Clarice Lispector, Leminski.(brazilian famous writers)
No, all of this is too much priceless heritage, too generous, too warm, too emotional, too memorial,
too intangible for us, who have not learned to be a country.
Brazil also doesn't deserve to lack oxygen in Manaus. But it needed to make the nation sick and release the vaccine faster. There were stadiums from the mind of a dazzled megalomaniac. We are kings and queens of joy in a land without quality basic education, without decent public health, without political conscience.
Dare to conquer yourself, said the philosopher Nietzsche. But what would it take to conquer ourselves? How long will we have the courage not to be ourselves? Not to be what we need to be?
I'm sorry, that's why I write.
The trio can wait, keep the chips, hang the streamers, the costumes. Brazil doesn't deserve the carnival.
