La bella signorina

"The Italians of Picos", by Graziani Gerbasi Fonseca, is an excellent historical work
of reconstituting the histories of the descendants of Italians who settled in Piauí,
a fact little known by historians and Piauí. The book is full of interesting life stories,
some very funny and curious.
Since the family discovered this fact, we have become more interested in Italy.
At the end of the year, we left for Rome, leaving Milan and stopping in cities like Pompeii,
Florence and Siena. “La Bella signorina” was what the friendly middle-aged waiter called me,
when he served the piece of pizza, in a restaurant near Rome.
Italians, in general, are outgoing and friendly, they laugh at anything. In Venice,
even the gondoliers seemed to be arguing and suddenly they were laughing out of nowhere.
I really miss those ten days I spent there. I would like to go back, but in a summer.
After a few years, my uncles joined and left on another trip, a true adventure through
the lands of Vibonati. Here, what a surprise, the patron saint of the city is Santa Luzia,
 the protector of the vision.
I still wonder if there is any distant relative, what life he would have,
if he would be looking for us. I would love to discover and exchange figurines with him.
Almost ten years after the discovery, there is little progress, as there are many processes
on the way to the embassy. We still haven't made it, but I think it's closer than far.
I don't want to live forever in Europe, but having the recognition of citizenship is
certainly an event to celebrate. I still want to go to Vibonati, the birthplace of my
ancestors. I want to eat gellato again. I want to spend a day reading around the
Colosseum in Rome and go to Sicily. And, if I can't go yet, I enjoy my dolce far niente a
la Piauí, in a hammock, escaping the heat and admiring our sunset.
